Zakat is the third pillar of Islam, and a fundamental part of completing a Muslim's faith. Zakat is obligatory on every Muslim who is sane and has reached maturity and has complete ownership of wealth above the pre-determined level of nisab. They must also have held this wealth in possession for one lunar year.

For Muslims who meet the conditions above, a necessary purification of one’s wealth is achieved through donating 2.5% from one's assets and savings to at least one of the 7 asnaf, as defined in the Holy Quran:

“Zakat is for the poor (Fakir) and the needy (Miskin), and those employed to administer the funds (Amil), for those who have embraced Islam (Muallaf), for those in bondage (Riqab) and in debt (Gharimin), those who strive in the cause of Allah (Fisabilillah) and for the wayfarer (Ibnussabil). This is an obligation from Allah, and Allah is Most Knowledgeable and Wise.” (At-Taubah: 60)

Alwehdah distributes Zakat mainly to Fakir and Miskin within the local Arab/Muslim community, with provision for other asnaf on an as-needed basis.
